Our Chief Clinical Officer spoke with Mandy Connell about pre addiction. This is a relatively new term which describes mild to moderate substance use issues. At this level of use people may consider harm reduction approaches which involve reducing consumption of a substance. People need to consider the following questions when they are concerned about their substance use: How much control do I have over how much and how often I use? Is it causing problems in my relationships personally or professionally? Am I taking risks when I use that cause danger to myself or others? How physically dependent on the substance have I become (Has my tolerance increased? Do I have withdrawals when I stop)?

This podcast also offers advice on how to express concerns for a loved one that is drinking or using too much. The keys to success for these courageous conversations are 1) get your thoughts and concerns organized, 2) pick a time and place to talk that is private, appropriate, and respectful, and 3) be prepared to provide help and support if they need help finding professional help.
